Historic Herkimer County is New York State’s tallest county, with its feet in the Mohawk Valley and its head in the Adirondack Mountains. With the Mohawk River and Erie Canal coursing through it, Herkimer County has rich history since the Revolutionary War era. At the turn of the 20th Century, Northern Herkimer County grew famous as part of the 6-million acre Adirondack Park, with Old Forge as the gateway.
